I'm thoroughly exhausted, but considering I went to bed at around 4 this morning I think I'm doing pretty well.
Last night I ate dinner at the hostel - they do a family style dinner every night. There was an abundance of sangria and cerveza and everyone was having a good time. I wound up meeting a nice young couple from Sweden and Indonesia and we went down to the Puerta del Sol to ring in the new year. It was a friggin zoo and everyone was packed in like sardines. A little before midnight the police swarmed the place and unceremoniously shoved people to the side to get their cars through. We moved a little further back and rang in the new year by eating 12 grapes. We were expecting fireworks, and felt a tad cheated when there weren't any. But so it goes.
After midnight we went back to the hostel where everyone commenced drinking before a group gathered to go out. We went to a club right around the corner around 1am and got in with the help of a little bribery and the help of the hostel staff.
I didn't buy a single drink but wound up getting sufficiently looped and after dancing for a couple hours I made my way home after a brief but frustrating stall at the door because they weren't letting people out for some reason. I then made friends with one of the guys who works here and we snuck downstairs into the alley to smoke before I reached critical mass, brushed my teeth, and passed out.
For some inconceivable reason I woke up after only about six hours of sleep with a really unfortunate headache and decided to go out to City Kebab for a sandwich and fries, took a walk to the park, and then came back and fell asleep for another few hours. I dragged myself out for tapas this evening and now I'm hanging out in the communal room - the internet is better here and it's nice to have a little company.
That's all for now, happy 2015!
